One of the biggest things on my bucket list for the past few years was to move to a new city and start my adult life with a clean slate so to speak. Well, I’ve done that, and now I’m trying to figure out what other things I should be striving towards.
Although I always make a list of goals, I want to accomplish each year, most of those goals are relatively small picture. Besides buying a house, landing my dream job, and eventually having a family, I haven’t really thought about any other big picture things to put on my bucket list for a while.
Luckily, I stumbled upon this site called Bucketlist that helps you make a list based on what other people are doing. I’m not exactly someone who follows trends or does things just because other people are doing them, but I’ve got to admit there were a few interesting ideas on there. Plus, just making a list of things I’ve already done showed me just how much I’ve experienced in my 27 years on this planet.
Although most of the suggestions on the site are pretty stereotypical (IE. swim with the dolphins, get married, go skydiving…), I was able to compile a list of unique (well, unique to me) things I definitely want to do before I die. Since nothing in life is free, I’ve also included average pricing for everything I want to do so I can start saving now to make these dreams a reality.
1. Fly first class
I’ve walked through the first-class section on planes at least a dozen times, and man would I love to actually experience flying in style. Of course, to get the most out of it I would want to make sure it was a long-ish flight, at least 5 hours or longer. Taking a look on Air Canada’s site, if I wanted a one-way ticket to Puerta Vallarta, Mexico, a first-class ticket would set me back about $1000. Pricey but I guess that’s how much 5 hours of luxury in the cloud’s costs.

2. Ride a hot air balloon
I don’t know why, but I’ve always wanted to experience this. My HB doesn’t really like heights, so there’s a good chance I might do this one alone or with a group of strangers. After comparing a few different hot air balloon companies in Toronto, it looks like the average price is $300. And that price isn’t for a private ride which can cost as much as $1000. Still cheaper than a Louis Vuitton purse!
Bucket list savings goal – $300
3. Cook my way through an entire cookbook
After watching the movie Julia & Julia, I’ve always wanted to pick a recipe book and attempt to make every dish in there. I’m by no means an expert cook (or even an amateur cook), but I think it would be a pretty cool thing to accomplish.
Depending on what cookbook I’d choose, I’d try my best to just use my current grocery budget to pay for it all. That being said, I’m sure I’d have to buy a bunch of ingredients I don’t already own, so to be safe I’ll say this goal would probably cost me an extra $200. I could be completely off, but I guess I’ll just have to try it out and see.
Bucket list savings goal – $200
4. Write myself a letter to open 10 years from now
Since I haven’t kept a diary since high school, I would love to be able to write to my future self and read it 10 years from now. I think this would be such a cool thing to experience, plus it probably wouldn’t cost me more than $5 for the materials.
Bucket list savings goal – $5
5. Visit every continent in the world
I love to travel, and although I know I may not be able to visit every country in the world, every continent is definitely doable. So far I’ve already been to Asia, Africa, North America, and Europe. All that’s left is South America, Oceania, and Antartica, so I guess I’m more than half way there! How much this will cost me to do is a whole other ball game though.
A roundtrip flight to Australia averages about $2,000; a roundtrip flight to Costa Rica is roughly $800; and a cruise to Antartica costs something crazy like $15,000 – $25,000. Let’s just say, if I don’t make it to Antartica before I die, I won’t be heartbroken. Since these prices just factor in travel and not accommodations or food (besides the cruise), I’m thinking this could cost me upwards of $30,000 to tick this off my bucket list. Yikes!
