Saving Money on Gettin’ Your Hair Did

Apologies for the title, I blame it on me watching too many trashy realities shows this summer. Damn you Netflix! Any who, this is a post I’ve been meaning to write since I started this blog 6 months ago, but I just haven’t gotten around to writing it until now.

Over the past year and a bit, I’ve been dying my hair. I am a natural blonde, but I’ve always wanted to be a bit blonder. Not platinum Barbie blonde, just a bit of a brighter blonde than my usual dirty blonde.

When I lived with my roommate last year, she got her hair cut and dyed at Blanche Macdonald, a hair school in Vancouver, and for the most part she had great experiences there, so I thought I’d try it out too. The thing with hair schools is they are cheaper than going to a real salon but man you better be ready to spend a lot of time in that salon chair!

My first experience was great. It took about 4 hours to get my hair colored and it only cost me about $60. That may seem like a lot a money still compared to buying box dye, but I loved the color and if I had wanted it, I could have gotten a cut for free (it’s included in the price).

I waited about 6 months to get my hair dyed after that let me tell you, it was a very different experience. The end product was a great hair dye job, but it took 6 hours, I had to miss a family dinner because it took so long, and it cost $80. Basically, I was kind of pissed. And hungry. And exhausted.

So is gettin’ your hair did at a beauty school really a money saver? Well, seeing as the last time I got my hair professionally dyed it cost me $180, I’m going to say yes. Is it worth saving $100 to sit in a chair reading old Lou magazines for 6 hours? No, I don’t think so.

Maybe I should try using box dye next time, though I haven’t done that since high school and I’m afraid of ruining my hair. Or maybe I’ll just wait until before my wedding next May to get it dyed by a professional. The less I dye my hair the less money I spend!

Have you ever gotten your hair done at a hair school before? What was your experience like?
